What could a better
freight program change?
Explore a freight-cost scenario using your shipment profile and the supplied model assumptions. Then bring the right questions to a real review.
Illustrative example loaded. Fixed rates, ZIP-distance proxy and optimization percentages are assumptions—not live carrier quotes or a savings promise. See the calculation method.
Model assumptions & calculation method
This is a deterministic scenario calculator. Its fixed figures come from the supplied design specification and are not verified current market benchmarks. It does not query carriers, maps, a rating engine or an audit system.
Shipment and rate assumptions
- Parcel dimensional divisor: 139. Freight illustration divisor: 250.
- Dimensional weight = length × width × height ÷ selected divisor. Modeled billable weight = larger of actual and dimensional weight.
- Distance proxy = max(100, absolute numerical ZIP difference × 0.03). This is not routing mileage and does not measure real geography.
- Parcel base scenario = $12 + modeled billable pounds × $0.45.
- LTL base scenario = $75 + proxy miles × $0.25 + modeled billable pounds × $0.12.
- FTL base scenario = proxy miles × $2.10.
- Same-mode and parcel-to-LTL rate comparisons include a fixed 15% scenario fuel allowance.
Non-overlapping annual comparison
- Current transport = annual shipments × entered base rate, plus entered fuel percentage.
- Current total = current transport + annual accessorial spend.
- Rate saving = max(0, current transport − same-mode scenario transport). Accessorials are excluded from this difference.
- Eligible mode scenario: parcel modeled billable weight above 150 lb screens LTL, with its weight recomputed using 250 and a 15% fuel allowance. FTL flexibility uses 18% of entered annual base spend. LTL consolidation uses 22% of entered annual base spend. The latter two leave entered fuel unchanged.
- Accessorial scenario = 25% of entered annual accessorial spend. This assumes an opportunity; it does not establish that any particular fee is improper or recoverable.
- Combined result = max(rate saving, mode saving) + accessorial scenario, limited to 45% of current total. The ceiling is a model control, not evidence of achievable savings.
Amounts are shown in USD. Monetary results are rounded to cents; benchmark formulas retain their precision until annual totals are rounded, so the displayed rounded per-shipment figure may not multiply to the exact annual figure. The model applies one representative profile to all entered shipments. Real LTL pricing may use classification, tariffs and other rules; FTL pricing does not generally follow this dimensional-weight illustration. Actual service eligibility, handling, capacity and governing terms require a separate assessment.
Calculator ranges are interface limits, not carrier limits: up to 10 million annual shipments, $100,000 base cost per shipment, 100% entered fuel, $100 billion annual accessorial spend, 1 million lb actual weight and 1,200 inches per dimension.
For actual package-rating context, see FedEx’s dimensional-weight explanation. That source does not validate this calculator’s freight divisor, rate assumptions or opportunity percentages.
Calculator questions & answers
# What does the freight savings calculator estimate?
It compares an entered annual cost baseline with fixed same-mode and eligible mode/consolidation scenarios, then adds a separate assumed accessorial opportunity. The larger transport scenario is selected rather than adding both. The combined result is limited to 45% of entered annual spend. All results are illustrative planning scenarios; the calculator does not obtain carrier quotes, validate eligibility or forecast a CPC engagement outcome.
# Are the calculator’s rates current market benchmarks?
No. The fixed rate formulas, distance proxy and opportunity percentages are supplied model assumptions. They are not verified current market rates or executable offers. Use actual shipment files, current agreements, required services and qualified proposals for a commercial review. The sample inputs are an invented example, not a client result.
# How does the calculator avoid counting savings twice?
It excludes annual accessorial spend from the rate and mode transport comparisons. It selects the larger of those alternative transport savings, then adds the assumed 25% accessorial opportunity once. The 45% ceiling is applied to the combined annual result. When the ceiling applies, the displayed transport contribution is reduced so the shown contributions still add to the total.
# What do the ZIP-distance and dimensional-weight figures mean?
The ZIP calculation is a deterministic numerical proxy, not geographic routing mileage. The package model uses divisor 139 and the freight illustration uses 250, with the larger of actual and calculated weight used in the supplied rate formulas. The freight divisor is not a universal LTL classification or truckload billing rule. Actual carrier terms, measurements, rating and acceptance must be checked separately.
# Do the 18%, 22% and 25% levers guarantee savings?
No. They are fixed hypotheses from the design model. FTL transit flexibility screens an 18% base-spend reduction, LTL consolidation a 22% base-spend reduction, and accessorial review 25% of the entered annual fee budget. Real lane, capacity, handling, service, inventory and agreement conditions determine whether a change is workable. Required charges are not presumed improper or recoverable automatically.
# Can this tool evaluate ocean, air or every shipment in a mixed network?
This model covers the specified Parcel, LTL and FTL categories and applies one representative shipment profile to the entered annual volume. It does not evaluate ocean or air procurement, real intermodal routing or a mixed shipment file. Those require their own operating specifications and commercial analysis. Use the site’s mode guides to prepare the appropriate review.
# Does entering calculator information send it to CPC?
No. Calculation takes place in your browser. The calculator does not upload entries or submit an inquiry. Copying the summary copies text locally. If you follow the separate consultation link and submit that contact form, only that form’s submitted information is sent to the consulting team. Avoid entering confidential documents into either the calculator or the public inquiry note.
